Dining table and entertainment center

We recently took delivery of some custom "old teak" furniture from Batavia 3.  This is likely the last of the furniture that we'll have made at this shop since it is closing its doors in January 2015.

Halloween 2014

Tonight we celebrated Halloween at our apartment complex.  We had a group dinner provided by the hotel and the kids got to go trick-or-treating.  We had a great time.

Julia spent alot of time and effort making the costumes even with the help of our basic sewing machine....  They turned out awesome!

Another Bali Trip

For fall break, we decided to take a 4 day trip to Bali.  We rented a villa in Sanur and mostly just chilled.  I rented a motor bike and used it to get the requisite pizza and gelato.  We did visit the Bali Bird Park and Uluwatu Hindu temple.  At the bird park, we saw lots of birds and they also had a reptile park as well.  We even feed a saltwater croc a live chicken which was pretty impressive.  We saw monkeys at the temple and also a local dance show which featured Hindu characters including a very animated monkey.  We also met up with friends in a posh resort and had a nice evening with them.  All in all, it was a refreshing trip that ended too soon.  Smile

Camping at Badak Air

This weekend, Joseph and I went camping with the cub scouts.  The weather was perfect with no rain and it cooling off nicely at night.  The boys had a great time doing activities like:

Paris, France

We booked tickets for a short stay in Paris on our way back to Jakarta from our yearly summer trip to Texas.  We weren’t sure how the trip would work out, but luckily, everything went smoothly.  Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris was probably the worst I have seen in terms of getting through immigration. They had literally one booth open to process the hundreds of people coming through immigration.  Once we were through immigration, we collected our ridiculous number of bags and proceeded towards the train station to a place that would store our excess bags for the few days we were in Paris.  It was expensive but worth it not to drag 5 large suitcases around Paris.
We rented a cute apartment on airbnb.com.  The price was very reasonable and we had a comfortable stay.  We wanted to take the train to the apartment, but the line for the train tickets was really long so we just hopped in a taxi.
We arrived Sunday morning and had a fairly low-key day.  Doss walked down the street and bought some pizza for lunch.  Later we took the kids to a nearby park where we could get a view of Paris and the Eiffel Tower.  We also walked around the neighborhood near the apartment and ate dinner at a Middle-Eastern restaurant.  I had a kebab.  The portions were quite generous and the food was good.
We were all up early the next morning.  After being awake a few hours, we decided to go back to bed for just a little while.  The next thing we knew, it was already 1:00pm!  I was afraid we had squandered our only full day in Paris.  Turns out, there was nothing to worry about.  We had pizza for lunch and then headed out to see the sights around 3:00pm.  We walked to the Belleville metro station and caught the metro to the Hotel de Ville.  From there we walked to all the different sights…Notre Dame, the Louvre, and of course the Eiffel Tower.  It rained off and on during our excursion so we got wet plus the kids were cold since the temperature in Paris this time of year was cool.  Still, we had a great adventure walking along the Seine and taking in the sights.  We made it to the Eiffel Tower just before dark.  Doss bought us tickets for a boat ride on the Seine.  Joseph and I took lots of pictures of Paris at night.  We finally made it home around midnight so we really did make the most of our one full day in Paris.
The next day we slept in and then checked out of the apartment before noon.  We went to a nearby park and then had some lunch at another Middle-Eastern restaurant.  Then we caught a cab to the airport.  We had a super short stay in Paris, but it was still a really great trip. I am glad we did it. I hope we can come back another time and actually go in some of the art museums.  The Impressionists are my favorite artists so I would love to see the paintings/sculptures of the many French artists that I have always admired.
Here are a few black and white photos from our trip.  When I get more time, I will post more pictures…in color.

There were lots of Cathedrals in Paris.  This one was near the apartment.

Air Purifier update

I am happy to report that our Honeywell air purifier is still going strong after almost 7 months.  I just replaced the pre-filter for the third time.  We don't quite make it to the recommended 3 months for changing, but this is Jakarta after all...

Belitung Island

We took a long weekend trip to a local favorite – Belitung Island.  It is not in any of the travel books yet and is amazing.  It is known for beautiful white sand beaches with large granite boulders randomly strewn about.  The island used to be mined for tin as well back in the day.

The first day, we visited a beautiful beach called Tanjung Tinggi where we rented an inflatable raft and explored the granite boulders randomly strewn around.  We also had an amazing seafood meal overlooking the beach.  We also visited another beach called Bukit Berahu where we watched the sunset and watched a 6 foot snake chase a rat in the rocks.  Exciting!

The second day, we hired a boat and visited several islands (one had an old Dutch lighthouse constructed in 1882) and went snorkeling.

Out last morning there, we strolled to Tanjung Pandan beach and walked about the beach chasing crabs and other small sea creatures before heading back to Jakarta.

It was an amazing place and hopefully we can return another time!

Blue and Gold Banquet

Tonight was the Blue and Gold Banquet for our Cub Scout Pack.  We had a nice dinner, handed out lots of awards to the boys (Joseph got his Bear award, yeah!), and were treated to US Marines preforming the flag ceremony.  It was very impressive.  There is something extra special about having an armed color guard. Trip to Bali

For spring break this year, we decided to go to Bali.  Julia’s friend, Faith, joined us as well.  We went snorkeling, hung out at the beach, ate a nice seafood dinner at Jimbaron beach, and rode elephants at Taman Safari.  As always, Bali is a great place to hang out!
