On the day we drove out to Sunda Kelapa Harbor, we also stopped by Kota Tua, the old town of Batavia or Old Jakarta. This area was once the center of Dutch Colonial Indonesia. We got out at Fatahillah Square, an old cobblestone square that is lined with old colonial buildings from the Dutch era. We took a quick look around before heading out to Glodok or Chinatown.
The first thing that caught my eye were these rows of brightly colored bicycles with color-coordinated hats. Then we saw a girl ride by on a purple bike and she was wearing a purple hat! I’m not for certain, but I bet you could rent a bicycle to ride around the square.
This old building is now an art museum.
This is the old town hall built in 1627…also a museum.
Shortly after we arrived, DH was detained by a group of Indonesian school kids that wanted to interview him for a school project. He had the camera so I took the rest of the photos on my camera phone.
More photos of the old town hall.
O
This building is where the Museum Wayang (puppet museum) is located. It is supposed to have one of the best collections of wayang puppets in Java.
Café Batavia is also located at Fatahillah Square.
